Link Building Tools You Shouldn’t Miss This Year

Link Building in the Post Penguin Era

Efficiency in link building requires a set of tools to generate results beyond its normal output time. These tools have their own ways of helping link builders make their work much easier. These include:

  • Increasing the speed of finding link opportunities on different web places.
  • Regular tracking of web mentions and fresh/new links.
  • Providing new search queries that are targeted to a specific niche type.
  • Quickly generate results that are needed for link acquisition (e.g. collecting emails of link targets).

There are several link building tools that provide a few or even all of the features stated above. However, you only have to choose a few of them to minimize costs and focus on the core features that these tools offer.

Tips in finding effective link building tools:

  • Investigate the features of the tool by finding its available product reviews. See if those reviews have one main focus, i.e. emphasizing one best feature of the product. Note the product and its primary feature in a spreadsheet.
  • Be updated with the latest tweets of some of the best link builders around the world. Create a Twitter list to keep track of the latest tools/products they are promoting. A recommendation from them is one way to identify if the product is worth trying for.
  • See if the product has a free/trial version. This could give you an opportunity to try first the product before paying its premium version.
  • If the product site has a blog, determine if it has blog posts about the new updates of the product. This could help you assure of the continuous improvement of the tool to better serve you and all of its users.

When finding the best tool in link building, you need to ask yourself, “Will the product satisfy my needs today?”. If yes, then the product is worth considering in your link building toolset.

In this post, I’ll share with you my link building toolset that I always use in executing my link building campaigns for my clients.

Let’s get started.

Cognitive SEO Backlink Checker (Freemium)

The good thing with this tool is that it covers almost everything you need to know about the backlink profile of a website. Take a look at the image below. This is what the platform of Cognitive SEO looks like when you performed a basic link audit.

CognitiveSEO – Links tab (upper portion)

Insights on the upper portion of the backlink profile:

  • The number of referring domains shows the number of sites linking to a specific website regardless if links built are sitewide or not.
  • Monthly link velocity graph will show the approach used in link building. If in case a sudden rise/drop is seen in the graph, it simply means that multiple links were built using automated tools. This is very important in identifying if the site is worth the effort of getting links from.
  • Daily New/Lost links graph will provide an idea if the site is building its content portfolio to continuously acquire links from other sites. However, if links were automatically built (black hat), the same drop/rise can also be seen.

Compared to other backlink checker tools, Cognitive SEO features both link authority and domain authority. These are good quality metrics to consider when discovering new link targets for your campaign.

There are still other features that product has but basically the above features are what matters most in link building.

Link Prospecting Query Builder (Free)

If you’re struggling with creating search queries for link prospecting, then link prospecting query builder from Target Local will do the work for you. What it does is simply the same with other paid link prospecting tools.

You would only need to identify the keyphrase, target area/location and the type of link opportunities that you want to discover.

For instance, you’re looking for guest blog targets that are connected to your business. All you need to do is type in your keyword – weight loss. Check the encapsulate check box if you want those two words to be present in the pages listed in the search results. You can add a query suffix if you want to remove any undesired type of pages (e.g. –site:wordpress.com). Then click guest blogging as your link type and click Submit.

The tool will provide a list of guest blogging queries that you can just click on if you want to redirect to Google search results.

SERP Scraper (Free)

This is one of the underrated tools in link building but has been a useful tool for my link building campaigns in the past four months. This tool has an easy-to-understand interface that newbies in the link building scene would love to use it.

I will not go deeper into discussing this tool since Garett Brown has created a simple guide in using SERP Scraper.

If you’re wondering about the output of this tool, here is what it looks like.

link-prospecting-sheet

Here is a link prospecting sheet that list down all the potential link targets with their available domain/page link factors that you can sort in ascending or descending order to filter out links/sites that are deemed irrelevant and low quality.

Bonus Chrome Extensions

  • LinkClump –  a useful add on for those who’re spending several hours in link prospecting.
  • Export Tabs – no need to find the source code of the page just to see the page title and its meta description, this tool will automatically give you this basic information.

Final Thoughts

As we are heading to a more advanced and more complex link environment, the use of tools is essential to cope up with the latest trends/updates and be able to produce work that will make our clients happy in their investments.
